Sanctuary Guardians is a suite of online training (12 modules) for local businesses and visitors about regenerative tourism in the Florida Keys, incorporating interactive multimedia learning activities and immersive 360-degree video.
Objective
DredwardsVR Consulting Inc (through its marine-focused subsidiary, BlueShift Immersive) was engaged alongside science communication and media specialist, Tiffany Duong, by the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation to create a suite of learning materials to encourage businesses and visitors to participate in regenerative tourism activities (such as coral restoration dives and debris removal) across Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.
Actions
Dr. Edwards was the lead learning consultant and developer and worked with local experts, business owners and restoration organizations to plan and create a flexible and personalized learning experience, built in the LMS Tovuti, that incorporates immersive 360 video, interactive learning activities and animations, and community engagement. Through the process, it was identified that the biggest need for businesses and visitors was the ability to find opportunities and partnerships relevant to their current business operations, interests and goals, leading to courses that promote self-direction and act more as a practical toolkit and communication hub that a traditional set of learning modules.
Outcome
The courses are scheduled to be released widely in June and the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation is in discussions about the possibility of extending and expanding the program to other national marine sanctuaries across the US.
